From the Desk of Jeff Bergholtz: Tips on Summer Workout Routines.

It’s hard to believe the official start of summer is just days away. That means you can finally show off the results of all those months you've spent in the gym, chiseling your physique for that perfect swim suit you've picked out.
But before you head off on your summer vacation or adventure, I’d like to offer a little encouragement on how you can keep that physique you've worked so hard for.
First of all – and this is a big one – your summer activities SHOULD NOT replace your work-out routine. Every summer I see clients fighting (and losing) the battle of the bulge because they think volleyball, softball or an afternoon of Frisbee on the beach is as good as an hour and a half at the gym. IT’S NOT. While those activities will no doubt help you burn some unwanted calories, your strength and resistance training regimen is essential to maintaining your physique and warding off weight gain.
Exercise tips for the summer. Don’t leave exercise behind.
- STAY HYDRATED. Drink lots of water. Your body needs more water than usual during the summer. Good hydration is also essential to weight loss and training.
- Never skip two workouts in a row. If you do this, you will probably go almost a week before you train again and who knows what that might lead too? Missed workout days could turn into weeks, months, summers and years!
- Exercise during your kid's practices. Don’t just sit around walk, jog, pushups, lunges, crunches. Get other parents involved as well.
- Exercise at your hotel while on vacation. Most vacation spots now have workout rooms and facilities. Some even trainers. Make sure you get a few workouts in while you actually have some free time. At the least, pack a set of “Perfect Push-ups” to take along.
- Don't forget to "reasonably" stay on your nutrition plan during the summer! Summers are fun, but there is no reason why you can’t still eat healthy. Grilling is great in the summer and fresh vegetables and fruit are at there best.
- Plan your menus and pack your food while on vacation or on the go. This will help you avoid the fast food trap and save some money for those vacation trips.
